Regardless of how you feel about genetically modified organisms (GMOs), it’s hard to argue that consumers shouldn’t have the right to know if we’re eating them. Monsanto, big ag scientists, and our government keeps saying GMOs are perfectly safe and that GMO labeling would only “confuse” consumers. In national surveys, it’s something like 93% of Americans are in favor of GMO labeling. No wonder big ag and food manufacturers don’t want to label because they know people may think twice before buying foods with GE ingredients.

The good news is that there are two major campaigns fighting for mandatory GMO labeling. The first is a campaign from LabelGMOs.org which is a 2012 ballot initiative in California. They are trying to get labeling on the 2012 ballot so voters can decide if they want mandatory labeling of GMOs in the state of California. They are forming groups in every major city in California. They need lots of help; click here to get involved: http://labelgmos.org/take-action/

The second, is a national effort led by the Just Label It campaign and they’ve been getting some nice  media coverage from USA Today to Business Week to Grist and Huffington Post. In an email from Stonyfield, Gary Hirshberg, CEO of Stonyfield Farms & a member of the Just Label It coalition, describes the campaign:

The Just Label It campaign is a broad based coalition of nearly 400 businesses and organizations dedicated to food safety and consumer rights who have called on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to require labeling of genetically engineered (GE) foods, to give consumers the right to know what is in our food. A petition on behalf of millions of consumers has been submitted to the FDA calling for the mandatory labeling of GE foods.

Below is a funny, but very appropriate 30-second video they created. Let the FDA know you want labeling. Take action here: http://justlabelit.org/takeaction

While I firmly believe in mandatory labeling of GMOs, I get a bit depressed when I realize how many people don’t even know what GMOs are. We need to spread the word. We need to tell others so people become aware and concerned. Talk to your friends, neighbors, coworkers and family. Get them fired up. If you encounter someone who believes GMOs are safe, appeal to their right as a consumer to make their own decision of what they buy. The bottom line is we have to get people to care. LOTS of people. Let’s face it, it’s hard to care about something when you don’t even know it exists!
