Witches, pumpkins, trick-or-treating, and lots and lots of candy. Today is Halloween. Worried about your kid’s candy consumption? Me too. With all the crazy additives from food dyes and preservatives,to partially hydrogenated oils and the 18 million different types of sweeteners out there, it sucks. Oh, and don’t even try to pretend that you’re not worried about all the candy YOU’LL be eating. So what to do? Turns out there are some creative ideas out there to deal with the candy issue:

Your family is visiting a friend’s family for the holiday weekend. The friend generously offers to have you stay at their house. Things are going great until it’s lunchtime and out comes the florescent orange mac & cheese and fake lemonade. What do you do? Well, you have a few options: (1) tell yourself that it’s only a few meals and it won’t seriously impact the kids’ health (2) tell your host that you’d never feed your child that crap (3) come prepared in anticipation of this possible scenario.

Health is incredibly important and I’m generally in favor of doing whatever you have to do to eat healthy. However, friendship is also precious and waving your nose in the air at her meal suggestion is not advisable either. No one likes to be made to feel bad about the way they feed their family. Instead, come prepared. Here are a few suggestions to survive a junk food weekend.

After doing a presentation for the Santa Barbara Girl Scouts, a troop leader came up to me with the empty box from a Lunchables package. She said she thought that given my presentation, I should see what was actually in this product. Notice how I used the word “product” instead of “food.” These are not interchangeable.  My goal with this post is not to make any parent feel bad about feeding their child Lunchables, but rather to open your eyes to what is actually in this item.

I started my research with on the Kraft Lunchables website. When I clicked on the picture of the Bologna + American Cracker Stacker with Juice, this is what it says:

Give them the good stuff. Made with Oscar Mayer bologna made with chicken and pork, Kraft American and Ritz Crackers. Includes Capri Sun Roarin’ Waters.

Nutritional Highlights

  • Excellent Source of Protein, Calcium
  • Crackers made with 5g Whole Grain per serving

Wow, protein, calcium and whole grains? This must be the “good stuff!” Or maybe not…

As I walked from my car towards the school grounds, it was like a scene out of a movie. Over a hundred girls in varying heights and coordinated t-shirts,  stood in a semi-circle around a Troop Leader with a bull horn. She was standing next to the American flag spelling out the rules of the Costa de OroInvestigate Your World Day Camp. This was the Santa Barbara Girl Scouts Summer Camp and I was there to present a session on reading food labels.

I couldn't resist using this picture.

I learned to cook with my daughter. We started a year and half ago and now both love it. If you follow this blog, you probably already know I didn’t always love cooking. My hubby is a great cook, but me, not so much. Or that is, until I actually started cooking. You can’t call yourself a bad cook until you do it on a regular basis. Once I started measuring flour and sauteing broccoli with my little helper, things just started to taste good. My 3-year old can’t wait to whip up pancake batter or prepare a green salad. She gets out her own plastic knife, cutting board, and stool and is thrilled as she cuts the bell peppers into strips.
